One of the most effective steps a municipal government can take to combat bigotry targeting Jews is to join the dozens of other cities worldwide that have already adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism —  the most authoritative, comprehensive, and representative tool to delineate all of the contemporary manifestations of this age-old scourge.

In 2020, the Parliament of Catalonia —  the autonomous region of northeastern Spain of which Barcelona is the capital —  adopted the IHRA definition.

In light of the swastika incident, as well as other occurrences of antisemitism seen in Barcelona in recent years, we are calling on the Barcelona City Council to follow the Parliament of Catalonia’s lead and help spearhead the collective effort against antisemitism by adopting this vital definition.

Petition the Barcelona City Council to Adopt the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism

In light of rising occurrences of antisemitism seen in Barcelona over recent years, we are calling on the Barcelona City Council to follow the Parliament of Catalonia’s lead and help spearhead the collective effort against antisemitism by adopting this vital definition.

The disturbing public graffiti incident in Barcelona—where a Nazi swastika was spray-painted on a wall to protest government health measures to fight the Covid-19 pandemicwas merely another indicator of a dangerous current of antisemitism rippling just beneath the surface in Spain’s second-largest city.
